A Message from Haywood County Animal Services:
Haywood County Animal Services is currently at capacity for intaking dogs and cats.
If you find a stray dog or cat, please do not attempt to pick up the animal and transport to our shelter.
The option available is to call our office at 828-456-5338 and report the location of the stray animal so that an officer may respond to the area to locate the animal. If you choose to confine the animal, please plan on fostering and keeping the animal. You can call the number listed above with your information, the location the animal was found and provide a photo of the animal so that we can forward it to an owner should one come forward.
We currently have all fees waived for adopting a dog or cat from the shelter. Our mission at Animal Services is to provide shelter to any stray or lost animal, you can help us with that mission by caring for the animal you picked up and by keeping it at your residence until an owner is located.
This phenomenon of overcapacity does happen and is very rare, our staff is working hard to find homes for all animals in our custody.
If someone has an animal they own and are wanting to surrender, please do not try to portray it as a stray you have found. If you need assistance with food or medical, we have resources we can direct you towards to help you maintain your animals. Otherwise, it hinders us to provide the animals who really have been abandoned within Haywood County.
